Gunther is neutered, UTD on vaccines, tested positive for FIV and negative for FeLV. Approx. DOB is February 2013.
What should you know about FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, aka Feline AIDS)?
FIV is not contagious to humans. It is species-specific, which means FIV will only infect other cats.
FIV is not a death sentence. In fact, many FIV-positive cats can live long and happy lives, as long as they receive regular veterinary care and prompt attention when illness arises. Like any chronic disease, FIV will need to be managed throughout the cat's life, as it cannot be cured.
Can an FIV-positive cat live with FIV-negative cats? Yes. As long as the cats peacefully coexist, the risk of transmission is minimal to none. Your vet may recommend periodic testing of your FIV-negative cats, especially if one of your cats falls ill.
How is FIV transmitted? FIV is transmitted through deep bite wounds, and is usually found in unneutered, free-roaming males.
